‘Tis the Season to Read Giveaway

Smile! You’re visiting the Noracast on a good day, no—a great day. Why?

As luck would have it, today begins the ‘Tis the Season to Read Giveaway! Curling up on a frigid winter night in your favorite, old chair with hot tea and a treat or two by your side is only made better with the addition of a fabulous book. For me, this means the book is usually a paranormal adventure romance, a fantasy complete with breathtaking locations, or maybe a science fiction journey filled with enough horrific moments to keep the zzz’s away. Yes! I’d easily trade in sleep  for memorable moments conjured up by my imagination that were inspired by authors who know how to spark curiosity and the promise of a grand adventure if I keep turning the pages.

Prizes? One winner will receive my supernatural/thriller “The Twelfth Paladin,” plus a $25.00 dollar Amazon or Book Depository gift card to spread the joy of reading just a bit during the holiday season. The book is available in print, e-book, or Kindle. This is an international giveaway. Random.org will choose the winner from the total number of entries.

The Twelfth Paladin

In “The Twelfth Paladin,” good against evil battles as an angel, demons, and a temptress extraordinaire, named Rachel Darnell, vie for the soul of Jake Cottrell. Jake foolishly dares Hell to burn him. Hell agrees.

Scarred with angelfire by a rebellious angel, named Micah, Jake Cottrell is sanctioned to become the twelfth paladin in Micah’s supernatural unit of slayers. However, regret abounds as Micah is banished and ordered to protect what he now despises…a human he believes is unworthy of such an honor. Never fear, Jake is a seeker of mischief who soars on a blistering blacktop to escape the wrath of Hell while he transforms into the twelfth paladin.

How to ENTER? It’s easy! In “The Twelfth Paladin,” Jake Cottrell has a difficult time learning to count his blessings, like his family and friends…until they are placed in jeopardy because of his actions. This is the time of year many of us take pause to be extra thankful for our loved ones and for the opportunities we have to be productive. To enter: remind us all of something or someone to be thankful for. ‘Tis the season to celebrate and share our resources and time! This giveaway ENDS on December 7, 2012, so the gift card can be used in time for Christmas.

RETURN TO CAER LON by Claude Dancourt/Review & Giveaway!

RETURN TO CAER LON

Thirty hundred years ago, Arthur Pendragon, High King of the Ten Kingdoms, was betrayed and the royal city of Caer Lon became a myth.

Fifteen years ago, the sorcerer Wolfryth killed King William Pendragon in his quest for power and usurped the throne of Camelot. Queen Ylianor and her five year old son fled the kingdom to take refuge in Haven at Duke Geraint’s court.

Today, Prince Derek follows Geraint’s beautiful daughter Sacha into a reckless mission to save her brother from Wolfryth. He will need to embrace his heritage and to trust magic if he wants to find his way back to Caer Lon and unlock its secrets before the sorcerer kills them all.

REVIEW

In RETURN TO CAER LON, Claude Dancourt takes readers on a grand adventure with a descendant of Arthur Pendragon named Prince Derek, and he is accompanied by a feisty seer named Sacha…who will stop at nothing to save her twin brother, Elwyn, who has disappeared.

Son of King William Pendragon—killed by the wicked sorcerer Wolfryth, Prince Derek embarks on this all important and dangerous quest because not only is Elwyn’s life depending on his success, but the fate of Camelot’s people. It is time to reclaim his throne after escaping Wolfryth’s wrath fifteen years ago to survive in Haven at Duke Geraint’s court. Prince Derek has his hands full though, because Sacha, the beautiful, and headstrong daughter of Duke Geraint refuses to believe Elwyn is dead.

RETURN TO CAER LON’s characters are memorable, the dialogue is wonderful, often funny…especially between Prince Derek and Sacha. The way Dancourt allows their relationship to grow and not just “all of a sudden” happen provides many opportunities for romance lovers to be pleased. Sacha is my favorite character due to her passionate determination to save Elwyn. Who wouldn’t want her on your side?

The descriptive locations, the fight between good and evil, loyalty to family and friends, reclaiming a birthright to be king, and, of course, magic…all make this novel a very enjoyable read! It certainly allows readers to escape the humdrum of everyday life and go back in time to fight the good fight, where nothing is more important than family and friends. This is a fantasy adventure that I highly recommend. 4.5/5

Here are a few excerpts. Enjoy Dancourt’s lovely prose!

The older woman picked up the job the maid had abandoned, twisting the dark locks

together. Sacha said nothing, her eyes seeing beyond the reflection of their figures in the mirror.

The former queen caressed her head gently.

“Your father has to see to everyone’s well-being, Sacha, not just his son.”

“And what will be our well-being, if his heir dies?”

Ylianor closed her eyes briefly. Behind grief and anger, Sacha’s reasoning had its logic. She had said more or less the same thing to Derek in the morning. She tried another approach.

“Sebastian escaped, so maybe Elwyn-”

“Sebastian did not escape. He was sent back; as a warning.”

Ylianor stiffened. The young woman met her eyes in the mirror.

“I saw it, Ylianor. Wolves attacked and our men lost the battle. All were killed but the Swan and the Cub. Sebastian’s heraldry is a swan, with wings spread.. Elwyn…”

Sacha continued telling her dreams, so low her companion could barely hear the words.

“The wolf leader tortured and sent the black swan back to deliver a message.”

“What is that message, Sacha?”

“Hand over the son of the Dragon, before I slaughter you all.”

________________________________________________________________

“Elwyn is in Caer Lon.”

Derek stared at her in befuddlement and she calmly held his doubtful gaze.

“We have to go there.”

Irritation perked through his answer. “That is impossible. How would you know where Elwyn is anyway? We will ride northeast at dawn.”

He did not believe her. How could she explain? He would simply laugh and dismiss her

vision. Sacha took another swig of ale and immediately regretted it. The beverage was far stronger than what she was used to. She inhaled deeply to chase away the dizzying sensation.

Derek chuckled and walked to her shelter to take the jug from her hands.

“You want to be careful with that.”

She glared but her displeased glance was lost to him as he sat away from her, his attention entirely devoted to the recipient he started playing with, making it turn between his knees on the dusty floor.

Sacha took his pensive attitude for an opening and tried again.

“Derek, I know I am right. Elwyn is in Caer Lon. We need to go there…”

He continued his little game in silence, though she was sure he had heard her. Why could not he rely on her? Frustrating, stubborn, idiotic specimen of a…

“Sacha, Caer Lon is a myth. It was where the High Kings of Camelot held their court. The place was lost three hundred years ago. Elwyn cannot be there or it means he is dea-”

“He is not dead!”

She nearly screamed in anguish. He was her twin, her other half. If he had died, a part of her would have died too. He was alive. He was. She knew he was.

Accidental Hero/GIVEAWAY!

Danger—pain and suffering, mixed with excitement and enough adrenaline to kill an elephant is calling upon your sense of adventure. Let’s say, Jessie desperately needs your help, and if you fail to answer the calling…death will come her way. Are you ready to embrace this challenge and rush to sacrifice your life for another? Well, my all-time favorite heroes are the ones who’d do just that.

Ah, but things are never so simple. I love accidental heroes. These so-called ordinary men and women exist in their worlds doing what they are supposed to do, until a threat is unleashed that prompts a reaction from these people. Some folks reject the notion they could ever affect the outcome of a situation, others eagerly accept the new, completely risky endeavor dropped upon them.

Take a look at Jake Cottrell, the protagonist (and an accidental hero) in my latest release, The Twelfth Paladin. He’s a prime example of a person living a selfish existence, one who seeks out mischief and absolutely lives for adrenalines rushes, or as he calls them…smackdowns. Yes, Jake is a reckless character with a shady past and a family you would not desire, but he does have something special. Jake has courage and honor, yet they’ve been long ignored. After a death-defying Motocross accident, Jake is physically and mentally tested to see if he can rise above the wickedness around him and become the twelfth paladin in Micah’s (an angel) unit of supernatural warriors. He doesn’t seek out glory. No matter, it finds him anyway.

Another accidental hero I really like is Sam Deed (Vincent D’Onofrio) from the movie Happy Accidents (2000), which also stars Marisa Tomei. Sam is brave, determined, and a guy who never planned on having to endure such an adventure to find love. Although Happy Accidents is a science fiction movie, it’s actually more about the power each of us possess to change things.

From Moviefone: Is Ruby Weaver’s Mr. Right really an emissary from the year 2,470, or is he just a complete loon ball? This question is at the heart of Brad Anderson’s whimsical romantic comedy. The story opens with Ruby (Marisa Tomei) lamenting over her boyfriend Sam (Vincent D’Onofrio) to her shrink (Holland Taylor). In a series of flashbacks, the film quickly sketches Ruby as a neurotic with an unhappy track record concerning men and Sam as an oddball who is afraid of small dogs and has a barcode tattooed to his arm. But he’s nuts over Ruby, and at least initially, that is enough for her. Slowly, Sam begins to reveal his “past.” He tells her that he is from the Dubuque of the future and that he hails from a rare “anachronistic” family who believe that reproduction should occur the old-fashioned, fun way as opposed to the more popular cloning method. At first, Ruby is amused, until she realizes that he’s not kidding. After a series of arguments, he agrees to visit Ruby’s analyst, which yields unexpected results. This film premiered at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival.

Great news—GIVEAWAY! Ends March 27, 2012

Win a copy (e-book, print, or Kindle) of The Twelfth Paladin AND the movie Happy Accidents. Simply answer this question: Are you the type of person who’d become an accidental hero? Since I spend way too much time in the laundry room and grocery shopping…I’d definitely go for it. A little adventure can entice me anytime!

Still not sure if this giveaway is for you? Here’s the latest review of The Twelfth Paladin from Michelle. Her blog is A Lil of Dis A Lil of Dat Chelle Style.

“In all of my years of reading, I can’t say I’ve ever read a book about Angels and Demons. I tend to stick more towards suspense and horror books. Therefore, I was very excited to review The Twelfth Paladin and give myself the opportunity to break out of my reading comfort zone.

We start with the main character, Jake Cottrell, who is a rebel of sorts, if you will. Abandoned by his mom at a young age, living with an angry alcoholic father, it’s no wonder Jake takes to drinking, wild women, and motorcycle racing. However, during one of his races, he becomes injured and things will never be quite the way they were before his accident.

Have you ever had the sensation that things weren’t right? That there was an unseen force working behind the curtains, responsible for strange things or events? Jake deals with these very things as he is reconnecting with a “friend”, Davis Travers, now a successful heart surgeon. Davis, by any standards isn’t a very likable person. It’s a mystery to Jake how Davis managed to become engaged to the beautiful and mysterious Angie Helms as well as the tremendous success Davis obviously enjoys.

In the meantime, as Jake is skirting dangerously along the depths of evil, Micah, an angel, who is not on God’s good side, is sent to help Jake from losing his soul to the darkness. Micah is a likable character who has lost his faith in mankind after thousands of years. He’s witnessed the decline of human kindness and goodness towards each other. He is less than thrilled to be helping Jake and does little to conceal this fact.

I found myself mentally willing Jake to stop his actions as he stepped further and further into the darkness ruled by evil. At the same time, I found myself as curious as Jake as he begins to realize Davis isn’t playing an imaginary game. I became caught up in the action as Jake finds himself being pulled in by temptations which would appear to be too delightful to resist.

Nora Weston captures her characters with a vivid imagination. As you read, you can visualize the scene exactly how she describes it. You will find yourself rooting for the good guys, holding your breath, your heart beating just bit quicker during some of the more intense scenes, and completely caught up in this book!

I can say after reading The Twelfth Paladin, Nora has a new fan. I will definitely be paying attention to when Nora has a new book in the works. Don’t just take my word. Visit Nora and let me know what you think!”

Giveaway! Masquerade by Cambria Hebert

Holiday greetings to all! Today will be a joyful day, indeed…because Cambria Hebert is visiting the Noracast. Her debut novel, “Masquerade,” has received outstanding reviews, and I’m thrilled to say, it is a fascinating read you will not forget. Take a minute and read my review here! Leave a comment to enter her GIVEAWAY for one e-book copy. Giveaway ENDS January 4th! CONGRATS, Margot! You’ve won “Masquerade!”

“Masquerade” by Cambria Hebert

What if you sensed you were being watched….

But whenever you looked no one was ever there.

What if you knew you looked hideous….

But someone called you beautiful.

What if you surrendered your heart….

Only to have it betrayed.

Before. Everything was so much better Before. I wasn’t haunted by nightmares, my place at school was secure and my face was flawless. Now, I’m a freak and everything has changed. The worst part is that I can’t remember the night I was sentenced to the shadows. The memory has been stolen from me and I just can’t shake the feeling that someone, something is out there -watching.

Just when I think I have my life handled, Sam, with his intimidating golden stare and shiver inducing voice, makes me realize that I don’t know anything. He makes me see that my scars don’t matter. That they never mattered. I can’t help but fall for him, completely unknowing that he knows exactly how I got this way. Not knowing he was involved.

Heven has no idea how closely death stalks her. She has no idea what I have done to keep her alive. I fear the day she learns my secrets, finds out what I really am. But even then I cannot stop, I vow to make things right. Finally her hunter will be hunted, Heaven and Hell, faith and sin will battle, and we will be victorious. But first, Heven must learn to be what she never imagined.  I know her strength is there – I feel it. If we are to overcome all odds, she must push past her flaws – her frailties – to become much more.

Nora: So, Cambria, Heven gets super tired of her mother cooking chicken for dinner. (So funny!) I know you have a great fear of chickens, but do you cook them for your family? You’re not afraid of the packaged ones, right? LOL

Cambria: LOL!! I do cook them for my family. They don’t scare me without their feathers!! LOL. I will say that the whole chickens? (Turkeys too) I hate to touch those, and putting my hand in them to get out that bag of – er – parts is NOT happening. My husband opens it up, puts it in the pan and I literally throw an onion and lemon and stuff inside it. EW!

Nora:  Sam and Heven enjoy Bubble Tea, and the video on your website that shows you making it is AWESOME! Check that out HERE.  Did you like Bubble Tea enough to make it again? If so, what flavor will be your favorite? Also…what is the most unusual food or drink you’ve ever tried?

Cambria: Sure, I will make Bubble Tea again! I would love to try a flavored one. I haven’t had a chance to try that yet. I can’t say for sure which flavor I would like the best but I usually like caramel and chocolate stuff the best! Most unusual food or drink? I have to admit I am not very adventurous. I get grossed out easily. LOL. The grossest thing I have eaten is escargot I guess. Which is snails. Nasty, nasty little things. I didn’t even swallow it. Yuck.

Nora: I loved the suspense and truly terrifying moments in Masquerade. I wondered how it would all play out, and I must say, I was totally shocked by Sam’s identity. What is something (other than those chickens!) that has chilled you to your bones? Would it be snakes, spiders….the dark?

Cambria: Hmmm. There are lots if things I don’t like – like crickets- but chill me to the bone? Not much really – stuff that has that strong effect on me is more reality based – like someone breaking into my house, being kidnapped, etc….. Also, I think an experience with a ghost would be very chilling but I haven’t experienced one of those (yet).

Nora: Another aspect of Masquerade is the constant presence of Hope. I loved this aspect of your book. Are you generally an optimistic person? If so, what is something you hoped for and it finally came true?

Cambria: I like to think I am optimistic. Lol. I try to be. I am a stress monster though. I worry about stuff a lot. All kinds of stuff – even stuff I can’t control. Lol. But I always try to quell my worry with positive thinking. I try and tell myself that there is always hope – a constant presence of it. One thing I hoped for was this book in print. I hoped and dreamed of seeing this book published for soo long and it finally came true. It’s been fantastic.

Nora: Are you most like Sam, Heven, Cole, or Kimber? Why?

Cambria: I think I am most like Heven. I relate to her most, I think. I have never been scarred or disfigured on my face but there have been times in my life when I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror. There were times as a young kid that I got made fun of at school and wanted to blend in and be left alone. I also like to think that I bounced back from those things and found my inner strength. There’s also a side of me that liked to have fun like Heven. 😉 And if I am being honest I have some Kimber in me too…. I love clothes. LOL.

 Quickies!

Favorite book? This year its Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

Two movies you could watch over and over: Transformers and How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days (frickin hilarious!)

Thank you for visiting the Noracast, Cambria! I thoroughly enjoyed “Masquerade,” so I can hardly wait to see where you’ll take Sam and Heven next.

Twice is Nice in November

November. This is the month I must fight like the chickens, um…dickens, (although chickens can really fight) to keep a good sense of humor while trying to locate any sanity still left in my numb brain as I prepare for the holidays. Even though I simply cannot get warm enough November through March, I must still acknowledge the holiday season should always be filled with goodhearted activities that bring friends and families closer. Being thankful is easier to remember to do in November because of the Thanksgiving holiday, which brings to mind our freedom, and loved ones, yet the simple things in life…like hanging out with your kids or helping a neighbor are also highly valued. Below, you’ll see what I’m thankful for today, but I really could write a book about the blessings I’ve received throughout my life.

Family and Friends: I have six kids, a hubby who is one of the funniest people I’ve ever known, and two unbelievably mischievous dogs (Mushu and Tashi) who keep my life running at a marathon pace. My parents, siblings, and friends are kind plus entertaining, and thank heavens…tolerable of chaos, which comes with a clan like mine!

Electricity: Oh, I know, this may seem like a crazy one since electricity is nothing new, but without electricity, I’d have migrated to the south, because my electric blanket would be useless. Sad to say, my bedroom (in every house we’ve lived in) seems haunted, or…as I’ve said before, I’m actually a vampire! My bedroom is always the coldest room in the house no matter what the thermostat says.

Hot Tea: I will never disclose how much hot tea I drink in a day, but it is a lot. I’m not saying I’d kill for a good cup of tea, but…well, maybe I would. It does not matter to me if it is spring, summer, autumn, or winter—I must have it, and I’m so thankful there is something as simple as hot tea to help kill a bit of the cold.

Books! Well, of course, I’m thankful for books. “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexandre Dumas is my favorite. It has adventure, lust, murder…revenge, just everything that makes a great book. I almost always read paranormal romance, science fiction, horror, or fantasy, although history books are something I can get lost in quite easily too.

Now, on to the fun! The Twice is Nice in November contest (November 8-30) has begun. Leave a comment about something you are thankful for. It can be serious or humorous because I’m sure all comments will bring a smile to someone’s face. The winner of this contest (US/Canada) will win a print copy of “The Twelfth Paladin,” PLUS that same winner will also WIN a print copy for a friend because it’s time to get ready for the holiday season.

If you’re an International visitor, feel free to enter! The International winner will receive the e-book, as will that winner’s friend. I’d love to have both a US/Canada winner and an International winner. Questions? noraweston.nw@gmail.com

If you enjoy books about good versus evil, angels and demons, and all things supernatural…please enter!
